BRIEF HISTORY

The Church started with two families in a small cottage ( Bridge cottage), it later became too small for them as people joined which culminated in the purchase of a piece of land adjacent to Bridge cottage thus SMALLFIELD mission hall was built and opened in the spring of 1890.

Notable Contributors to the development of the Church; There has been a lot of sacrificial giving by God’s people to the church both financially and in service and the following are noteworthy;

Mrs. Lindsay; She contributed generously and the church porch was built in memory of her sister Jane Ann Tustin.

The Vorgers; They have been active in the Church for many generations ; Mr. and Mrs. Vorger were active in the mission work till their home calling , their daughter in law (Emily) regularly conducts services and prayer meetings in Bridge Cottage, their granddaughter Ivy ( Later Mrs. Anthony Cook) played the organ from when she was twelve, three of their great grand sons and a great- great granddaughter have taken part in active services in the mission.

Mr. Henry Thomas Harding; He was the first superintendent and his family was also very active in the church, he died in 1901. Worthy of note is that one of his sons later became a minister in Canada.

In 1937, A group of Christians who were mainly lay preachers were called to be trustees.

The Attwaters; Mr. Attwater became the Sunday School superintendent in 1933 and he ran the Sunday School with his wife till September 1962.
Mrs Attwater also ran regular women meetings which has continued ever since.
Eventually Donald Attwater was appointed Secretary, treasurer, Organist and Pastor until January 1957 and he was officially ordained in November 1961.

The name of the mission was eventually changed to SMALLFIELD EVANGELICAL CHURCH in 1961.

There was also Mr. V. H. John, Mr Charlie Bishop, Mr. Vince, Mr Pehlam , Mr Brand and Mr Ian MacDonald who were all very active in Sunday School, treasuries and general growth of the Church.

In 1964, a statement of faith was formed and the church commenced with 12 full members and 3 junior members.

Finally In 1965, the Church was registered as a building for religious worship before being registered for solemnization of marriages, the first wedding was conducted in September 1965 and since then many weddings have taken place.

The Church building was later renovated after Mr. Ian MacDonald drew up a plan and the church of God has been active ever since.

Giving unto the Lord is an act of love, trust, and worship. It is not merely about offering material things, but about surrendering our hearts, our time, our talents, and our lives to the One who gave us everything
